As part of the intergovernmental Ireland-Russia Joint Economic Commission, on November 24 2014 the first ever multi-agency Team Ireland Showcase was held in Moscow at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s headquarters, a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The showcase highlighted Ireland as an investment and joint-project destination, allowing Russian investment, VC, and R&D partners to explore the potential for establishing joint intellectual property or production bases using Ireland’s long experience in the commercialisation of innovative and high-tech projects.

Speakers at the event included: Ambassador Eoin O’Leary; Georgi Petrov, Vice-President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Dmitry Sazhin, Head of the Europe and American Department of the Ministry of Economic Development; Professor Shamil Gantsev, Member of the Federation Council; and Shane Nolan, Head of Growth Markets Division, Industrial Development Authority of Ireland (IDA); Dr. Darrin Morrissey, Director of Programs, Science Foundation Ireland; Peter Lennox, International Entrepreneur Programme Senior Development Advisor, Enterprise Ireland; Pat Flynn, Flynn O’Driscoll Lawyers, Member of the Board of Directors, Enterprise Ireland; Brien Henderson, Head of the Visa Department, the Embassy of Ireland, Moscow; and Dmitry Simonenko, a Russian serial entrepreneur who has two businesses in Ireland. The event was introduced by Gerard MacCarthy, Director of Enterprise Ireland’s Russia and CIS office.

Several Irish companies travelled to Moscow for the event including Prodieco, National Space Centre Ltd., Zartis, Ardilaun Energy, IDI and Cubic Telecom. The event was attended by Dr. Constantin Gurdgiev of the IRBA who also addressed the Irish Business Community at a Business Breakfast held at the Embassy of Ireland on November 25 hosted by Ambassador O’Leary, and organised by Avril Conroy, President of the Irish Business Club, and Gerard MacCarthy of Enterprise Ireland.

Ireland and Russia have strong economic relations, with Ireland being the 6th largest source of FDI for Russia, and Russia being the 10th most important international, and 3rd most important non-EU export market for Irish companies. Despite sanctions and two food bans, Irish exports to Russia increased by 23% in the first 9 months of 2014, and look set to finish the year in positive figures.

The Showcase event was followed this week by a two day visit from the Russian Chamber of Commerce to Dublin where a team that included 3 Russian companies met with Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Exporters Association and the IRBA, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, and Google.

A final Joint Economic Commission Event of 2014 showcases Ireland’s excellence in IT and will take place in Digital October in Moscow on December 11, including presentations by 4 innovative, Irish based IT companies about their positive experiences of working in Ireland, and also a ‘mock’ pitching session for Russian start-ups.
