Pig Import Ban into Russia

February 3, 2014

by Simon McKeever, Chief Executive, Irish Exporters Association

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has been informed by the European Commission that the Russian Federation has banned the import of pigs, pork and reproductive material certified from the EU after the 26th of January 2014.  The ban follows the discovery of cases of African swine flu in Lithuania.

The Department is in regular contact with the Commission who are working to try and resolve the issue with the Russian authorities.

The IEA is very concerned about the effect this will have on some of its members. We believe that the issue may not be resolved as quickly as we hope but we continue to be in close contact with the Department of Agriculture, who are keeping us regularly updated on the issue.

The IRBA will be kept updated as we receive further information.
